Stanley Cup Game 1, Detroit

In May 2009, Once the Pittsburgh Penguins had won the Eastern Conference of the NHL playoffs, and the Detroit Red Wings had just one win to go, I realized that going to the game might be possible. After figuring out how to get into the Red Wings presale, I got tickets for my father and myself. We made the trip to Detroit for Game 1 on Saturday night. Would there be a Penguins victory? And/or Riots?

There are no fires in sight, though there were police sirens after the game.

It's just like Detroit to have a hole in their sculpture.

Pittsburgh jerseys were more common than we thought they would be, between 10 and 15 percent, I think.

The arena is not totally surrounded by fencing. Still, one of the pieces of land nearby is a dirty lot, which was where press passes were distributed.

The arena was old but had good sightlines. The luxury boxes are at the top, so our relatively high seats were still good.

The lamp was lit after the Penguins' first and sadly only goal.

Though the walk to the Penguins bench was protected, the fans and staff at the arena were very polite. It's no Europe. Thank you.

Though it was a good visit, the final score was not what we desired.
